How do you read swell period, tides and spot type before you even paddle out? Here's how to spot good conditions for your level.
Ever stood on the beach wondering: Are these actually good waves — or should I wait? The honest answer: this is learnable, and it has little to do with gut feeling. Three things decide whether a day works for you: swell period, tide, and spot type.
Swell period is the gap in seconds between two wave crests. As a rough rule: noticeable push only builds from around 8 seconds of period, and from 12 seconds you're talking real quality waves — long enough that you can paddle out calmly between sets instead of getting run over every few seconds. Windswell (generated locally by wind) often brings only 6 to 9 seconds, meaning choppier, shorter-period water; groundswell (traveled from distant storms) delivers 10 to 20 seconds and the cleaner, more predictable waves.
Just as important: spot type. A beach break breaks over sand — the seabed keeps shifting, but a fall rarely hurts. A reef break gives you a fixed, predictable wave shape, but can be shallow and sharp — not for beginners. A point break runs along a headland and delivers long, mellow rides, but demands experience in timing.
Open the forecast and look at the period in seconds, not just wave height. A 60-centimeter wave with a 14-second period is often more pleasant to surf than a 90-centimeter wave with only 7 seconds — the latter arrives hectic and close together.
Many spots work best on a rising tide (incoming water), because it adds extra energy to the waves. At low tide, waves over reef often become hollower and more powerful, since less water cushions the impact — at some spots also more dangerous, as reef or rocks lie exposed. For beginners: mid to high tide at a sand spot is usually the most forgiving.
As a beginner you belong at a beach break: a sandy bottom means a soft landing even when you fall. Reef breaks and most point breaks can wait until your timing sits — their fixed bottom forgives mistakes far less.
Waves almost never arrive alone — they come in sets, groups of three to eight waves followed by a calmer lull. Watch the spot for a few minutes: count how many waves per set and how long the lull between them lasts. That exact lull is your window to paddle out.
Light offshore wind (blowing from land to sea) smooths the wave face and makes it cleaner to surf. Onshore wind (sea to land) makes it choppy and irregular — on those days, better to stay in the whitewash instead of practicing on unbroken waves.
Reef and rock are especially dangerous at low tide because they sit closer to the surface — a fall there hits harder than on sand. Check wind and tide before every session, not just wave height. Onshore wind can also make it harder to spot incoming sets.
If you're unsure whether a day matches your level, it probably doesn't. Wait for the next one with smaller, cleaner waves.
Write down three numbers after every session: period, wave height, tide stage. After a few weeks you'll see a pattern — which combination actually works well for you at your spot. That's your personal forecast, far more accurate than any app alone.
A trick almost nobody uses: don't just watch the waves, watch where the water pulls back between sets. That backflow (the rip) is often your fastest, calmest way out to the lineup.
