Honest answer: your flatwater board doesn't belong in whitewater. For rapids you need a completely different setup — shorter, wider, inflatable, with a different fin system, plus a helmet and PFD instead of sunscreen.
The biggest difference starts with the board: a touring board is long and narrow for speed, a whitewater board is built compact instead — all-round models typically run between 2.75 and 3.35 meters (9–11 feet) long and about 89 to 91 centimeters (35–36 inches) wide, with pronounced rocker (the upward curve of nose and tail) so the nose doesn't dive into waves instead of gliding over them. And it's almost always inflatable: a hardboard that hits a rock in a river gets a hole fast — an inflatable board absorbs the impact instead, much like a rubber raft compared to a rowboat.
The fin system has its own rules too: instead of a rigid, deep-set fin like on a touring board, you use short, removable or retractable fins. A fin that snags on shallow water or rocks can stop your board abruptly and throw you forward — exactly what the flexible system is built to prevent.
For river trips with rapids, all-round whitewater boards around 2.75 to 3.35 meters (9–11 feet) work well; for pure river surfing shorter boards of 1.80 to 2.40 meters (6–8 feet) are enough. The shorter and wider, the more maneuverable — but also slower on straight stretches. For starting out, a slightly longer all-round board is the safer choice.

Check before every run: does the helmet sit tight? Is the vest properly closed? Does the fin release on contact? These three checks take a minute and prevent the most common gear mistakes.
Rent full whitewater equipment for your first sessions instead of buying right away. You'll quickly notice which board length and helmet fit suit you — and avoid an expensive wrong purchase before you know how often you'll actually paddle.
A detail many overlook: buy your paddle a bit shorter than your flatwater paddle. In whitewater you sit or kneel lower more often, and a paddle that's too long becomes an obstacle instead of a tool.
