Your flatwater stance isn't enough in whitewater. Learn the lower center of gravity, the paddle's tripod effect, and the low and high brace.
Honest answer: the stance you learned on flat water isn't enough in whitewater. Moving water demands a lower center of gravity, wider feet and a paddle that doesn't just propel you but actively stabilizes you.
The biggest difference: on calm water you stand fairly upright, feet parallel. In whitewater you shift into a modified surf stance — feet slightly staggered, knees deeply bent, weight lower than you're used to. And your paddle becomes a third leg: the so-called tripod effect uses the paddle as a third contact point with the water, stabilizing you like a stool with three legs instead of two.
Just as important are braces: the low brace (wrists curled down, blade face up) and the high brace (wrists curled up, blade face down). Both bring you back into balance when a wave knocks you off — the low brace reacts faster and costs less energy.
Bend your knees noticeably more than on the lake, lower your center of gravity. A lower stance makes you less agile but far harder to tip over — exactly the trade-off you want in whitewater.
Instead of parallel feet, stagger them slightly, similar to surfing. Which foot goes forward depends on which side of the river you're heading toward an eddy on — for an eddy on river right you use one stance, for river left the mirrored one. That automatically puts your paddle on the side you need.
Keep the paddle in the water more often than on flat water — not just to propel, but as a third stabilizing point. The moment you feel unstable, actively drop the blade into the water instead of holding it in the air. This habit alone prevents most swims.

Wrists curled up, blade face down, you "grab" the water. The high brace delivers more stability against stronger tipping forces but costs more strength and technique. Use it when the low brace isn't enough.
A low, stable stance with active paddle use significantly lowers your swim risk — but it doesn't replace rescue technique. Practice braces first in calm, manageable water before you need them in a real wave train.
At higher whitewater grades (from Class III up), many paddlers kneel in difficult passages — that lowers the center of gravity further but costs visibility. Make this call with guidance, not by trial and error in a real situation.
Practice the low and high brace on land first: stand in your whitewater stance and simulate the motion until it feels automatic. Only then try them on flat water with a light wobble, before you actually need them in whitewater.
A trick from experienced whitewater SUPers: in uncertain passages, deliberately keep the paddle in the water longer than necessary instead of pulling it out quickly. The extra contact costs almost no speed but gives you noticeably more stability.
