A low-volume shortboard needs real paddle power. Build max strength, sprint paddling and core — surf-specific, not treadmill, with anti-detraining habits.
## Introduction The honest answer: a low-volume shortboard only works with a strong paddle base — specifically upper-body max strength, sprint and interval paddling, and a stable core. And you must train surf-specifically: front-crawl swimming is not the same as surf paddling.
The numbers make the gap tangible: competitive surfers put out around 404 watts peak power in 30-second sprint paddling, recreational surfers only 292 watts — that is almost 40 % more punch per stroke, and it decides whether you make it past the critical section or not.

## What You Need - Access to the basics: pull-ups/lat pulldown, rows, deadlift — the paddling pull muscles. - Water or ergo time for sprint paddling: pool, sea or a swim-bench ergometer. - Some floor for core work (planks, rotation drills, Pallof press). - 2–3 fixed training slots per week — continuity beats intensity. - A notebook: reps, times, watts (if ergo) — so you see progress.
### 1. Upper-body paddle max strength Paddling is mostly pull — lats, rear shoulder, back. Add heavy pull work in 2 sessions a week (pull-ups, row variants) in the 4–6 rep range. Max strength is the lever, because a faster time-to-pop-up and more paddle punch hang directly on normalised strength. Strong here means: more waves.
### 2. Sprint and interval paddling Surfing is an interval sport: short, hard paddle sprints, then waiting. Train exactly that — e.g. 8–12 × 15–20 seconds all-out paddling with easy rest between. That anaerobic power (the 404-watt world of competitors) does not come from long, steady swimming but from short, brutal repeats.
### 3. Core as the rotation engine The pop-up moves around 75 % of your body weight in under a second, and every turn starts in the core. An 8-week core programme demonstrably increases rotational power, jump power and core strength. Focus on anti-rotation (Pallof press), plank variations and rotational throws — not a thousand crunches.
### 4. Test surf-specific, not treadmill Do not rely on your running fitness: on the treadmill you hit a VO2peak of around 66 ml/kg/min, on the swim bench while paddling only 37 ml/kg/min — your body moves almost twice the oxygen on land as when paddling. Meaning: a good 5 km run says little about your paddle endurance. Measure and train in the paddling pattern.

Keep it up — detraining hits fast Four weeks without strength training cost you around 5.3 % jump height and 5.5 % max strength, and your stabilisation time rises by 61 % — surfing alone does not maintain these qualities. Two short maintenance sessions a week in the off-season stop you starting from zero in spring.
## Common Mistakes - Only long, easy swimming. That does not train the sprint power waves demand. Fix: add short, hard paddle intervals. - Wobble-board cult. Looks surfy, does nothing for strength and power. Fix: train strength on stable ground, balance separately. - Neglecting pull muscles. Many train bench press instead of pull-ups. Fix: paddling is pull — prioritise back and lats. - Skipping legs. Turns come from the legs. Fix: squats and jump power on firm ground, not on a ball.
## Safety Notes More paddling means more load on the shoulder — the shoulder is one of the most common acute injury sites in surfing at around 16 %. Balance the pull-heavy paddling with targeted external-rotator work, otherwise the force balance in the shoulder tips (more in the shoulder guide).
And respect fatigue: after two hours of surfing, sprint-paddle speed and jump power drop measurably. Tired paddlers get out of rips and shore-break less well — stop before your arms are completely empty.
## Pro Tip Measure your paddle fitness once a month with a simple test: a fixed distance (e.g. 400 m) against the clock or 30 seconds all-out on the ergo. Because surfing itself does not maintain your base, a repeatable test like this is your early-warning system — if the result drops, you know at once to add strength and sprint work, instead of first noticing it in the water through missed waves.
### Is swimming enough as paddle training? Only partly. Front-crawl swimming and surf paddling are not biomechanically the same, and long, steady swimming barely trains the sprint power you need for critical sections. Use the water for paddle intervals and add heavy pull-strength work on land.
### Does wobble-board training help surfing? For strength and power: no — studies show no benefit, sometimes even less leg power. For balance and sensorimotor control it can help as a supplement, but you build strength on stable ground. Separate the two goals.
### How often should I train? Two to three short sessions a week are enough: one for max strength (pull + legs), one for sprint paddling, core spread between. Continuity matters more than volume — and two maintenance sessions in the off-season prevent the costly detraining.
