Your turnout is ~60 % hip, not feet. Screw it into the floor and you pay with knee and ankle. Here's how to build real, controlled turnout safely.
## Introduction The honest answer that saves your knees and ankles: your turnout (en dehors, the outward rotation of the legs) comes on average around 60 % from hip external rotation – only 20–30 % is contributed by the ankle, the rest by tibia and knee. Force more "V" than the hip gives, and you screw the rest out through knee and foot – and exactly this compensated turnout is linked to lower-limb injuries in 3 of 4 studies.
The good news: turnout is partly trainable – but only in the right place. In dynamic tasks like jumps, the hip is the main motor, and knee/ankle compensate more the more tired or uncontrolled the landing. Your goal isn't more degrees at any cost, but held, controlled turnout from the hip.
## What you need - An honest picture of your anatomy: your turnout is partly limited by the shape of your thigh bone (femoral anteversion, averaging ~15°). - A mat for floor rotation exercises. - A resistance band for active external-rotation strengthening. - Mirror or camera: turnout almost always feels bigger than it is.
### 1. Find your real hip turnout (self-test) Lie on your front, bend one knee to 90°, let the lower leg drop loosely toward the midline – however far it sinks is your passive hip external rotation. That number is your honest ceiling; anything beyond it while standing is compensation.
### 2. Activate the deep external rotators on purpose The six deep hip rotators turn the thigh outward – without you having to "clench" the glutes. Practise deliberate external rotation against a light band, sitting or lying, to learn the recruitment. Turnout is also a nervous-system thing: recruit first, then strengthen.
### 3. Stand and hold turnout under control At the barre in first position: rotate from the hip until the knees sit exactly over the feet, without the arches collapsing. Prefer fewer degrees but cleanly held. That grooves controlled rotation instead of a screwed-in fake position.
### 4. Keep turnout stable in motion In pliés, tendus and small jumps, check: does the outward rotation stay, or does the foot roll inward the moment it gets dynamic? Because knee and ankle compensate under load, held turnout in motion is the real goal.
## Common mistakes - Screwing into the floor: heels stay, toes force outward. Fix: the foot follows the hip, not the reverse. - Clenching the glutes: tends to block the deep rotators rather than use them. Fix: rotate deep, don't clamp. - Pelvis tilting / ribs flaring: to cheat more turnout. Fix: neutral pelvis, long torso. - Degrees over control: a wobbly 180° turnout is worse than a stable 130°. Fix: control first.
## Safety notes Compensated turnout isn't a cosmetic detail but a documented driver of lower-limb injury. The body's strongest ligament, the iliofemoral "Y" ligament at the front of the hip, inhibits external rotation especially in extension – which is why turnout in arabesque is so hard and should never be forced. Never push through pain in knee or ankle. And accept: to this day there are no turnout norm values – compare yourself to your own control, not to the studio.
## Pro tip Do the "paper-plate test": stand in first position on two smooth sheets and first rotate to your maximum from the hip, then let the rotation ease back a few degrees under control until the knees sit exactly over the feet. That slightly reduced, controlled stance is your real working turnout – you dance more safely and cleanly from it than from the screwed-in maximum. Landings benefit too: foot orientation measurably changes landing forces.
### How do I improve my turnout safely? By working at the hip, where ~60 % of turnout is created: recruit and strengthen the deep external rotators (e.g. against a band), practise standing under control, and hold the rotation in motion. Never force more than the hip gives – the rest through knee/foot is dangerous.
