In a study of 97 breakers, almost every one had at least one injury — shoulder in about 61%, wrist in about 58%, neck in nearly 49%. These aren't outliers, this is the typical breaking profile.
Before you throw in the towel: these numbers aren't fate, they're a to-do list. And a surprising finding from the same study is both encouraging and sobering — mere warming up alone did not significantly lower the injury rate. ### 1. Wrists: mobilise AND strengthen Warming up alone isn't enough. Mobilise the wrists in every direction (about 5 minutes) and strengthen them deliberately: support position with weight shifts, wrist curls, support on the fists. Repeated support without strength irritates the nerve in the wrist canal — that causes tingling in the ring and little fingers. Strength is your best prevention.
### 2. Shoulders: stability from the rotator cuff Power moves are statistically linked directly to shoulder problems. Build the rotator cuff — the small stabilisers in the shoulder joint — with band work: external rotation, internal rotation, scapular work. A stable shoulder carries your weight safely; a weak one gives way under load.
### 3. Neck: the special rule for head moves The neck is the most dangerous zone once head moves come in. Strengthen the neck muscles slowly and isometrically, long before you ever attempt a headspin. And respect the limit: years of head rotations can even cause a fibrous thickening on the skull — the notorious "headspin hole". Head moves are advanced territory, never a beginner's toy.
### 4. Manage the load Most injuries come from overuse or acute errors during too-fast progression. Increase volume and hardness step by step, schedule rest days and alternate intense with light sessions. Your tissue gets strong through stimulus plus recovery — not through constant load.
The most important sentence in this guide: strength protects better than caution alone. The data show that general warming up doesn't significantly lower the injury rate, while higher fitness does. So build a strength foundation alongside your dancing, especially for wrists, shoulders, core and neck.
And treat nerve symptoms seriously: numbness or tingling in the fingers is a warning from the wrist canal, not a trifle. For persistent complaints, see a doctor — conservative treatment like rest and splinting works well, but only if you react early.
Introduce a 10-minute "armour programme" before every session: 5 minutes of wrist mobility and strength, 5 minutes of band work for the shoulders. It sounds like little, but over months it adds up to exactly the robustness that keeps you away from the typical breaking injury profile.
