Giant stride or backward roll? How to enter the water safely and calmly depending on boat or shore — and exit again without injury.
Why do divers always fall backward off small boats into the water? It looks theatrical, but it's pure physics and caution. Water entry and exit are among the highest-injury-risk moments of a dive — not the depth, not the fish, but the jump off the boat or the climb over slippery rocks.
There isn't one correct technique, only the right technique for the platform at hand. A stable dive boat with a high freeboard calls for something different than a small RIB, and a sandy beach calls for something different than a rocky cliff. Pick the wrong technique for the wrong spot and you risk a shifted mask, a lost fin, or — worst case — a fall against the boat or rocks.
The good news: there are only a handful of standard techniques, and they're explained and practiced in a few minutes. Train Smart. Play Hard. here means very concretely: the least glamorous part of the dive still deserves your full attention.
The giant stride is the classic choice for large, stable dive boats and liveaboards with high freeboard. Regulator in your mouth, BCD half inflated, one hand holding mask and regulator, the other free on the BCD's inflator valve. Then take one large, deliberate step forward into open air — don't jump, don't hesitate. The long step keeps your body upright and minimizes splash.
On small RIBs or tenders with a low, unstable edge, the backward roll is the standard. Sit on the boat's edge, back to the water, legs crossed, chin tucked to your chest. On command, simply let yourself fall backward. The trick: tank, regulator and BCD stay protected from the boat's edge during the roll, and you move away from the hull instead of hitting it.
On a sandy beach, walk backward or sideways into the water once it's too deep to stand safely, and only put your fins on there. On rocky shores or with a rocky bottom, a giant stride from a raised platform is often safer than wading over slippery ground.
On exit: secure your gear first (weight belt, then BCD, then fins — depending on the ladder situation), then climb up yourself. Climbing an unsteady ladder in full gear risks an unnecessary fall. Clarify the sequence with the boat crew before you surface.
Do your last buddy check before you're standing at the entry point, not after — the next diver is usually already waiting there. A short stop at the entry point keeps the whole flow calm and safe for the group.
Entry and exit are teamwork with the boat crew, not a solo maneuver. Wait for a clear go signal and never step in when the spot below you isn't clear yet — a collision with another diver or a boat ladder happens in seconds.
In current or waves at the entry point, a moment of patience is worth more than any hurry. And whenever you're unsure: speak up before jumping instead of silently going in — a guide would rather correct you beforehand than after.
Practice the backward roll once on land or in a pool before doing it for the first time in open water. The queasy feeling of falling backward blind almost completely disappears once you've felt the motion once.
A trick from experienced boat divers: during the giant stride, keep your eyes on a fixed point on the horizon, not down. That automatically keeps your body upright and stops you from tipping forward.
Because the backward roll on low, unstable boats like RIBs protects the gear — tank and BCD don't hit the boat's edge — and moves the diver away from the hull instantly. On tall, stable boats the giant stride is standard instead.

Say so before you go, not after. A good guide or boat crew would rather wait a few seconds and answer your question than have you jump in unsure. Uncertainty isn't weakness — it's exactly why the buddy system exists.
