Check the locking mechanisms before every big stage: a pole that suddenly collapses under load isn't just annoying on steep terrain, it's a real fall risk. On asphalt or hard-surface sections, rubber tip covers are worth using — they protect the ground and dampen the constant clacking that quickly gets annoying on trails with lots of other hikers.
Trekking poles aren't a substitute for sure-footedness, but a useful extra buffer — especially on descents, where hiking accident statistics show most stumbles and falls happen, driven by fatigue. On rough, rocky terrain, avoid wedging pole tips into cracks or between rocks — that can cause falls with an outstretched arm. On very technical terrain (boulder fields, via ferrata) poles are often more hindrance than help and belong folded away in your pack.
