Which part under your board actually turns you into a foiler? The honest answer: four parts, and they're named differently than you might think. A windfoil set consists of a mast, fuselage, front wing and stabilizer — four components that together turn a windsurf board into a flying craft.
The first mix-up usually happens with the word "mast": in foiling, this does not mean the sail mast, but the slim, vertical foil strut under the board that connects to the water. It's typically 75 to 95 centimeters long — an 80-centimeter mast is a solid middle ground for most beginners between enough clearance over waves and still-good control.
At the bottom of the mast sits the fuselage, an elongated connecting shaft that the front wing and stabilizer attach to. Its length shapes handling: a shorter fuselage makes the foil more maneuverable and is ideal for relaxed freeriding, a longer one gives more tracking stability for pumping height and depth control, and for racing. Most windfoils fall between 85 and 115 centimeters of fuselage length.
The front wing is the part that generates actual lift — comparable to an airplane wing operating underwater. For beginners, wings between 1,100 and 1,700 square centimeters are recommended: big enough for early, stable lift, small enough to still stay controllable. The stabilizer, the smaller wing at the back, balances the front wing's lift and prevents uncontrolled pitching.
The foil mast is all about height control: a longer mast gives you more time to react to waves and gusts before the front wing breaches the surface or drops too deep. For beginners, a mast toward the upper end of the 75-to-95-centimeter range is usually the more forgiving choice.
A bigger, thicker front wing delivers more lift at low speed and forgives mistakes more easily — exactly what you need for learning. Smaller, thinner wings with a higher aspect ratio are faster and glide more efficiently, but demand noticeably more finesse. Only swap the wing once your current one is genuinely holding you back — not before.
A shorter fuselage makes the foil more direct and agile in turns, a longer one gives more tracking stability in a straight line. For your first sessions, a mid-range length around 85 to 100 centimeters is a safe choice that doesn't push you toward specialization right away.
A bigger stabilizer stabilizes more strongly at low speed, a smaller one allows tighter, faster turns. For beginners: lean toward slightly bigger, which forgives more small balance mistakes during the learning phase.

Check all bolted connections between mast, fuselage and wings before every session — loose hardware in foiling is a safety issue, not just a performance one. Transport the complete set with edge protectors; the wings' leading edges are delicate and sharp at the same time.
Ask your local shop specifically for a "beginner setup" instead of individual parts. Many manufacturers deliberately bundle mast, fuselage, front wing and stabilizer so the combination is matched to each other — mixing individual parts by gut feeling causes more mismatched purchases than it saves.
