The best sport spots and adventures in Italy – travel tips, packing lists and first-hand experience from DOMISPORTS.
Ligurien · Hiking, Snorkeling, Kayaking · Best time: Apr–Oct
Five villages, one steep trail network: the coastal paths between Monterosso and Riomaggiore are short but punchy — endless steps, non-stop sea views. Cool off afterwards straight from the rocks, or paddle village to village by kayak. Start Sentiero Azzurro early morning — gets crowded after 10am.
Sardinien · Windsurfing, Surfing, Scuba Diving, Climbing · Best time: May–Sep
Caribbean-clear water with thermal-wind drive: northern Sardinia lines up windsurf bays, dive spots between granite boulders and climbing crags near the coast. When the wind is on, the water belongs to the boards — on calm days, the rock takes over. Porto Pollo is THE windsurf spot. Best winds May–Sep.
Südtirol · Climbing, Skiing, Hiking, MTB · Best time: Year-round
UNESCO rock as a year-round arena: via ferratas and Alta Via treks in summer, the Sellaronda on skis or by MTB, plus walls steeped in alpine history. The lift infrastructure is first class — the fitness for the Pale Mountains you bring yourself. Via Ferrata Brigata Tridentina for advanced — breathtaking.
Kampanien · Hiking, Kayaking, Snorkeling · Best time: Apr–Oct
A vertical coastline with stairs instead of trails: old mule paths climb between lemon terraces high above the Tyrrhenian Sea, while kayak tours past grottoes and rock arches wait below. Start early — light, temperature and quiet are at their best in the morning. Start Path of the Gods from Bomerano, not reverse.
Trentino · Windsurfing, Climbing, MTB, Sailing · Best time: Apr–Oct
The Alpine lake with wind on a timetable: Pelér in the morning, Ora in the afternoon — and in between, sport climbing above the shore and trails with lake views. Few playgrounds pack this many sports into so few kilometres. Torbole mornings: Ora wind from 1pm reliable like clockwork.
Trentino · Climbing, Bouldering, MTB · Best time: Apr–Oct
A climbing village of world renown just north of Lake Garda: walls facing every direction across all grades, a mild climate, and in the Rock Master an annual showcase of the world's elite. Fill rest days with trails or the boulders at the edge of town. Climbing mecca at Lake Garda's north tip — 1000+ routes.
Ligurien · MTB, Climbing · Best time: Year-round
Liguria's outdoor double act: a dense enduro network running from the ridgelines to the sea, and limestone walls with decades of climbing history. Shuttle up, trail down, focaccia at the harbour — that's the Finale rhythm, almost all year long. Enduro MTB trails right above the sea.
Aostatal · Skiing, Hiking · Best time: Oct–May
High and snow-sure like few places in Italy: wide glacier pistes above 3,000 metres with Matterhorn views and an extra-long season. In summer, high trails beneath the four-thousanders of the Aosta Valley take over. Ski below the Matterhorn — links to Zermatt in Switzerland.
Sizilien · Scuba Diving, Hiking · Best time: May–Oct
Ancient backdrop, living water: around Isola Bella you snorkel and dive a protected marine area while Etna smokes on the horizon. For hiking, head into the Alcantara gorges — or straight up the volcano. Isola Bella marine reserve + Etna within reach.
Toskana · Scuba Diving, Cycling · Best time: Apr–Oct
A compact island with a big sports menu: wrecks and walls for diving, plus coastal roads and trails that slice neatly into day loops. Small enough to dive in the morning and circle Monte Capanne in the afternoon. Wreck diving + coastal cycling on Napoleon's island.
Lombardei · Kitesurfing, Hiking · Best time: Apr–Oct
Alpine panorama meets thermal wind: around Colico at the lake's north end you get reliable wind windows for kiting, while the mountains above stack up hiking trails full of lake views. Wind on the water, quiet on the ridge — both in one day. North wind at Colico — reliable kite spot on the alpine lake.
Sizilien · Hiking, Skiing · Best time: Year-round
Sport on living ground: hike across lava fields and craters born yesterday, and in winter carve turns on the volcano with the sea in view. Guides are mandatory for the summit zone — the mountain decides how high you go. Europe's most active volcano — hike & ski the crater.
Apulien · Snorkeling, Cycling · Best time: May–Oct
Flat riding country between two seas: quiet coastal lanes and olive groves make long tours easy, and on the rocky Adriatic side you snorkel through grottoes and coves. Ideal for base-mileage days broken up by swim stops. Grottoes & turquoise water between the two seas.
Valtellina, Lombardei · Bouldering, Climbing, Hiking · Best time: May–Oct
A granite valley in the municipality of Val Masino, province of Sondrio. The Val di Mello nature reserve was established in 2009 by resolution no. 802 of the Lombardy Regional Council of 27 January 2009 and covers 4,560 hectares, the entire catchment of the Mello stream; the valley floor lies at 1,148 metres at Rasica and the side valleys rise to 3,431 metres at Monte Pioda. The organisers of the international bouldering meeting Melloblocco describe Val Masino as granite terrain running from boulders to big walls. Melloblocco 2026 ran from 6 to 9 May, with the next edition announced for 2027 in Val Masino; the organisers explicitly name careful conduct in the terrain as a condition. Coming by train and bus pays off: at Melloblocco registration the organisers reward participants who show their train and bus tickets.
Lombardei / Alta Valtellina · Snowboarding, Freestyle, Skiing · Best time: Nov–May
Olympic venue of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games: Livigno Snow Park at Mottolino staged big air, halfpipe, slopestyle, ski cross, snowboard cross and parallel giant slalom, while the park at Carosello 3000 held aerials and moguls — 26 Olympic titles were decided in Livigno. The Mottolino sector has 27 runs (6 blue, 16 red, 5 black) between 1,815 m and 2,730 m, the longest covering more than 5 km with 875 m of vertical. The Mottolino Snowpark — latterly over 60 obstacles on 800 m across M, L and XL lines — closed for the 2025/26 season and was replaced by the Livigno Snow Park. Lifts open 28 November 2026 and run into early May. Check the operator's park status before you travel: the old Mottolino Snowpark closed for the 2025/26 season and the Livigno Snow Park took its place. The Olympic big air, halfpipe and slopestyle courses stood on the Mottolino side, aerials and moguls at Carosello 3000 across the valley.
