A jump powered by your own legs, with no edge or ramp: load the tail, then extend both legs explosively. It's the base for practically every park trick.
An ollie is a takeoff you generate yourself — not the edge, not the kicker. That's exactly why it comes first: if you only let the ramp fling you into the air, every bigger feature turns into a control problem, because the timing was never yours. The typical mistake is jumping upward as if off a diving board — the board stays down and you land in the backseat. The right order is: bend the knees, load the tail with a slight shift of weight back, then extend both legs explosively — on a kicker, exactly as you leave the lip. Drill it standing still first, then on flat ground, then on the smallest roller. What often gets missed: how much pop comes back is partly the gear — a cambered board returns noticeably more than a soft rocker board.
