The honest answer: you recognize a good placement by the sound — a solid, deep "thunk," not a bright "ting." If the tool lands with a dull thud, the tip sits in firm ice and you can hang your weight on it. If it rings hollow or the ice shatters away, pull out and swing again.
The second secret: power comes from the wrist, not the arm. A good swing is like throwing a dart — a loose wind-up, then a fast wrist snap at the last moment. Hammer with your whole arm and you tire fast, hit imprecisely and shatter more ice than you catch.
And the key thing for your forearms: hold the tool loosely. Most of the load rides on the lower two fingers and the pinky rest; the index and middle fingers stay relaxed. A clenched death grip cuts off circulation — exactly what drives you into the "pump" (fat, numb forearms) and the screaming barfies. A loose grip isn't laziness, it's endurance.
Grab the grip low, little finger on the pinky rest, the edge of your hand like a "karate chop" in line with the shaft. That transmits the force straight into the tip. Hold loosely — you don't clamp the tool, you let it swing in your hand.
