The first steps decide your entire race. How shin angle, body position and the drive phase actually work — and how to train them right.
Why do the first steps of a sprint look so different from the rest of the race? Because they're their own phase with their own rules. The first three to five steps after the start are called the drive or acceleration phase — and more of your time gets decided here than most beginners think.
The key lies in the shin angle. On the very first step, your shin sits flat at around 45 degrees to the ground, so you drive your force forward instead of upward. With every following step, the angle opens up until it's almost vertical (around 90 degrees) by the end of the drive phase — your body shifts step by step from pushing into running.
Research on world-class sprinters shows how long this phase lasts: elite athletes sustain pure acceleration over 30 to 40 meters — roughly a third to almost half a football pitch. As a hobby sprinter you usually accelerate for less, because you hit your personal top speed sooner. Even world-class athletes don't reach true top speed until somewhere between 50 and 80 meters — meaning in a 100m race, sometimes not until two-thirds of the way through.
