What actually counts as a false start? The answer is more precise than most people think: if you react within 0.1 seconds of the gun, you're automatically ruled a false start — not because you cheated, but because the human brain demonstrably cannot process the sound signal any faster. According to IAAF research, elite sprinters sometimes reach 0.08 seconds — so the rule sits close to the physiological limit.
The crouch start out of the blocks is therefore no side note — it's the first of four race segments, and it helps decide the whole time. A clean block start gives you an edge from the first tenth of a second that you'll never fully make up later in the race.
The good news: block setup isn't a secret, it's biomechanics. Research on block spacing shows that the medium setting (30–50 cm pedal spacing) delivers the fastest average time across distances — faster than blocks set very close together or very far apart.
There are three standard block spacings: bunched (under 30 cm between pedals), medium (30–50 cm) and elongated (over 50 cm). The medium setting is considered the best compromise between fast block clearance and enough time to build force — which is why most sprinters start here.
A proven starting value: front pedal about 60 cm from the line, rear pedal about 90 cm — roughly two and three foot lengths. Pedal angle sits around 45 degrees. From there you fine-tune by leg length and strength.
At "on your marks" you settle into the blocks, hands behind the line, knees on the ground. At "set" you raise your hips, shoulders push slightly past your hands, the rear knee leaves the ground. At the gun, you drive explosively off both legs — the front leg delivers most of the force, the rear leg follows immediately.
Practice the start only off a real signal (gun, clap, command) — never off counting "one, two, three." Otherwise you train anticipation instead of real reaction, and that's exactly what leads to false starts later.
The first three to four steps stay short and powerful, the body stays strongly leaned forward. Stand up too early and you lose the forward drive the blocks just gave you.
The explosive start places sudden, heavy demand on calf muscles, Achilles tendon and hip flexors. Warm up ankles and hips thoroughly before practicing real block starts, and increase reps gradually. Stop immediately at any pain in the Achilles tendon or calf — overload happens here faster than many expect.
Film your start from the side and specifically watch the angle of your upper body as you leave the blocks. Most beginners unconsciously stand up too early — fixing just this one detail often helps more than any strength exercise.
