What sets long jump apart from sprint and high jump? How a takeoff board works and what your first training session looks like.
The honest answer first: long jump isn't just "run fast, then jump." It's the art of bringing your sprint speed exactly onto a 34 cm wide takeoff board — and switching in a single step from "as fast as possible" to "as far as possible".
That's exactly what sets long jump apart from its siblings in track and field. In sprinting, only one thing counts: getting to the finish as fast as possible. In high jump, you rotate almost backwards over a bar, with a nearly vertical takeoff. Long jump, by contrast, wants you flying almost horizontally — long jumpers take off at an angle of only about 18 to 22 degrees, not the 45 degrees you might remember from physics class. Why so flat? Because you don't want to lose your running speed — and because the landing area in the sand sits roughly 50 cm lower than the takeoff board, which pushes the optimal angle down even further.
The good news: long jump is one of the more accessible jumping events. You don't need pole vault technique or backward rotation like in high jump — just a clean sprint line and a feel for the right takeoff point. Injury-wise, long jump is manageable: jumping events in track and field see around 8.65 injuries per 1,000 training and competition exposures — lower than in most team sports. The ankle gets hit most often, accounting for around 23% of all injuries among long jumpers.
A typical first session is more relaxed than you'd think: warm-up with easy running drills, then short 6–8 step approaches with a jump into the pit, finishing with a few relaxed jumps focused on landing. Nobody expects a full 40-meter approach from you on day one.

Start with a 6- to 8-step approach — enough to build speed, but short enough to stay controllable. Only once this short approach is reliable does it get gradually extended.
Early on it pays to deliberately practice landing — legs extended forward, knees bending, hips pushed forward. A poor landing costs you a casual 20 to 30 centimeters of distance — more than most beginners gain from extra approach speed.
Long jump is one of the lower-risk track and field events, but the takeoff itself is intense: when your foot plants on the board, forces of 7 to 12 times your body weight briefly hit the takeoff leg. Warm up the ankle, calf and hamstring thoroughly before running at full speed, and only extend the approach once balance and landing sit securely.
Film your first jumps on your phone — from the side. You'll be surprised how different a jump feels compared to how it actually looks. Most beginners only realize on video that they're braking far earlier than they thought.
