The honest answer to why you barely move forward in breaststroke: almost always it's the kick – more precisely, that your feet don't work as paddles. In breaststroke the larger share of propulsion comes from below, from the legs.
The modern whip kick makes the difference. Instead of splaying the knees wide like a frog, you draw the heels toward your bottom, turn the feet outward and whip them together in a circle behind you. The pressure builds on the sole and inner edge of the foot – like a paddle, not a wedge.
The decisive point isn't the knees, it's the feet. A flexed foot grips water, a pointed foot slips through uselessly. This guide teaches you the whip kick step by step – and shows why the old wide frog kick tends to slow you down.
One more reason it's worth drilling: the kick is also the biggest source of drag in breaststroke when you do it wide and with a pointed foot. Done cleanly it accelerates you strongly; done sloppily it brakes you again in almost the same movement. Few techniques in swimming have such a large lever.
### 1. Draw the heels to your bottom Bend the knees and pull the heels close to your seat. The knees open at most hip-width, no wider – they stay under the body instead of folding out to the sides. The smaller you make yourself here, the less drag you build.
### 2. Flex the feet outward Now the most important moment: pull the toes toward your shin (flex the foot) and turn the feet outward so the soles point backward. Only this position turns your feet into paddles. Flexed foot = propulsion, pointed foot = brake.
### 3. Whip back and out Whip the feet together in a circling motion back, out and down. The pressure runs over the inner edges of the feet. This whipping motion is the actual drive – fast and round, not slow and pressed wide.
### 4. Close and stretch At the end you bring the legs into a long, closed line and only now point the feet. You're streamlined again and glide. Close first, then glide – never skip the closing.
### 5. Check it with the board Take the board and swim the kick in isolation. Feel whether you glide one to two metres after each kick. If the glide is missing, you're working too wide or with a pointed foot – fix the foot position first.
Breaststroke is the most knee-loading stroke. The outward turn must come from the foot and hip, not from a twisted knee. A stabbing pain on the inside of the knee is the warning sign of "breaststroker's knee" – then drop the volume and check your foot position.
Never open the knees wider than hip-width and never whip abruptly against a locked knee. Warm the legs up before longer sets and increase your lap count slowly.
The fastest fix for "I don't move forward" is flex the feet. Practise at the wall: sit on the pool edge, pull the toes toward the shin and turn the soles outward until you feel it in the ankle.
Only a flexed, outward-turned foot grips the water. Automate this one movement and you often double your propulsion overnight – with no extra strength.
### Whip kick or frog kick – which is better? The whip kick is clearly more efficient: narrow knees, flexed feet, fast whipping motion. The old wide frog kick with pointed feet brakes and loads the knee more. For propulsion and joint protection, the whip kick is today's standard.
### Why don't I move forward with the breaststroke kick? Usually because of pointed feet: if the feet are extended, they slip uselessly through the water. Pull the toes toward the shin and turn the soles outward – then your feet grip water and push you. Propulsion comes from foot position, not more force.
### How wide should I open the knees? Hip-width at most. The widespread myth "splay wide for more power" is wrong – wide knees build drag and load the inner knee. The power comes from the whipping motion of the feet, not from knee width.
### Does the breaststroke kick hurt the knees – is that normal? Slight pulling with poor technique happens, real pain is a stop signal. Reduce volume and knee width and focus on a clean outward foot turn from the hip. For persistent inner-knee pain, a check with a physio or doctor is worth it.
### Do fins help when learning the kick? For the breaststroke whip kick, not really – normal swim fins force a pointed foot and work against the flexed foot position. Practise the kick barefoot with a board instead. Short fins are useful at best for freestyle and dolphin kicks, not breaststroke.
