"When exactly am I even supposed to breathe in butterfly — I either run out of air or lose the rhythm completely?" The honest answer: both are normal, because breathing in butterfly is more tightly coupled to timing than in any other stroke. There are two basic techniques: early breathing and late breathing.
With early breathing you lift your chin while the hands are still pulling under the body — you're up early and back down early. With late breathing, the head deliberately stays down a blink of an eye longer — we're talking fractions of a second, but that exact delay stops the head from rising too soon and pulling the hips down. Two of the fastest butterfly swimmers in the world, Joseph Schooling and Chad Le Clos, both breathe late — with slightly different execution.
Breathing frequency is part of the timing too. Beginners mostly breathe on every stroke, advanced swimmers switch to every other stroke because that keeps the rhythm more symmetric. Sprint specialists reduce breathing to a bare minimum in races to avoid losing pace — with Michael Phelps as a well-known exception, able to breathe every stroke. A recent study on national-level female swimmers also shows: when breathing is reduced or briefly held, the timing of muscle activation shifts measurably earlier across several muscle groups — so breathing frequency doesn't just change your lungs, it changes your whole movement coordination.
Start with the simpler variant: the chin lifts as soon as the hands begin pulling under the body, stays briefly at water level, then drops right back down. This version is easier to coordinate because it feels closer to the "normal" sense of movement.
Lift the chin exactly to the water surface, grab a quick breath, and drop the head straight back down so you're looking at the pool floor. Every extra centimeter of height pulls the hips deeper down via the body wave and actively slows you down.
Once early breathing is solid, try leaving the head down a touch longer before lifting it. That syncs breathing more tightly with the end of the pull phase and disturbs your body position less.
Deliberately practice stretches where you breathe only on every other stroke. This feels hard at first because "no air" feels like panic — but it's trainable and over time becomes a more stable, symmetric rhythm.
Occasionally swim 10–15 meters completely without breathing, exhaling underwater. This sharpens your sense of how much time you actually have to breathe before the next cycle begins.
Breath-holding sections are a normal part of training, not a breath-holding contest. Stop immediately if you feel dizzy or gasp for air — that's a warning sign, not a training achievement. Never swim such sections alone or in unsupervised water.
