The dolphin kick is the fastest form of propulsion in swimming. Why it comes from the hip, how to learn it, and what slows it down.
Have you noticed that the fastest moments of a butterfly race are the ones where the swimmer's head is completely underwater? That's no accident: the underwater dolphin kick is the fastest way a human can move through water — faster than any surface arm movement. Swimmers reach up to 10 km/h with it, while surface swimming tops out around 8 km/h — the difference feels like jogging versus cycling.
The reason is hydrodynamics: on the surface you generate waves and fight surface tension, which costs enormous energy. Underwater, that resistance disappears, and the dolphin kick can convert its full force into propulsion instead of wave-making.
That's exactly why the kick is capped after every start and turn: the 15-meter rule allows the fast underwater kick but forbids hiding a whole race under it. The rule also protects against oxygen deprivation and blackout from holding your breath too long under high exertion — safety over record chasing.
For you as a beginner, one thing matters most: the dolphin kick is a hip-driven motion, not a knee trick. Get that, and you're already halfway there.
Both legs move simultaneously like a single fin — the feet stay close together, almost touching. The impulse comes from the hip, runs through the thigh, then whips through the knee down to the toes.
The most common beginner error: bending the knee too much, almost like pedaling a bike. That creates extra drag instead of propulsion. The knees do bend slightly, but the power comes from hip extension, not active knee bending.
Float vertically in deep water and hold yourself at the surface using only the dolphin kick — arms can stay overhead or at your sides. This drill builds hip power and core stability without you having to worry about swimming at all.
Practice the kick in a streamline position (arms stretched ahead of the head) on your front, then your back, then your side. Back position is ideal for feeling it out because you can breathe freely and see the surface.
Fins amplify every movement and instantly reveal whether the kick comes from the hip. If you barely feel the fin tips working but feel the motion in your belly and glutes, you're doing it right.
The vertical kick drill is tough on hip flexors and the lower back — ease into it rather than going long right away. And stick strictly to the 15-meter limit if you're training in a lane with competition rules: it also exists to protect you from holding your breath too long under exertion.
Stop immediately at any cramping in the hip or thigh — it's a typical sign of ramping up dolphin kick training too fast.
Give yourself a short underwater stretch to practice: 5–8 meters of dolphin kick off the push-off before surfacing. Exactly this skill — fast underwater propulsion after starts and turns — is the lever that lets many swimmers gain the most time without any better arm technique at all.

With the vertical kick in deep water or the streamline kick on front, back and side using a kickboard. Both drills fully isolate the leg motion and build hip power before arms come into play.
