Beacon, shovel, probe, airbag: what this gear really does, what studies show about its effect — and why practice matters more than the purchase.
Can gear actually save you from an avalanche? The honest answer: No - but it can get you found faster, protect you from being buried deeper, and in an emergency make the difference between minutes and hours in rescue. Beacon, shovel, probe, and airbag pack aren't optional in open terrain - they're the baseline kit you shouldn't leave without.
The effect is measurable. An airbag pack reduces average burial depth significantly: from around 42 cm without an airbag to about 15 cm with one - that's the difference between "buried to the hip" and "completely under the surface." With a deployed airbag, the adjusted risk of critical burial drops from 47% to 20%, and mortality drops by around 11 percentage points, from 22% to 11%.
But - and this is the honest part - gear only works if it's used correctly. Around 20% of all airbags fail to deploy in a real accident, and 60% of that is simply because the wearer never pulled the trigger. The best gear is useless in the pack.
Always wear your beacon on your body, under your jacket, never in your pack - a pack can be torn off your body by the avalanche. Switch it on before every trip and check send/receive with your partner. A beacon sitting in a pack is useless in an emergency.
Your shovel needs to be ready in seconds, not after five minutes of digging through your pack. Pack it so you can reach it quickly with cold, stiff fingers - in an emergency every second counts, because survival chances drop sharply after 15 minutes of burial.
Once the beacon has gotten you close to the find spot, probe first before you start digging. That saves you digging in the wrong spot - a mistake that costs precious minutes in an emergency.
An airbag only helps if you actually pull it in an emergency - under stress, in a split second. Practice the pull regularly, ideally physically with a training cartridge, not just mentally. The most common reason for an undeployed airbag is simply that nobody pulled in the panic.
Buying gear is the easy part. Practice beacon search regularly with buried transmitters, ideally several times a season. A beacon cuts average recovery time from 120 to 35 minutes - but only if you know what you're doing in the moment.
