How serious is this really? In 2019, according to DAN, 40 of 200 reported diving fatalities — one in five — involved technical dives. That sounds harsh, but it's no reason to panic: the statistic mostly shows that preparation here isn't optional, it's the actual sport. Respect the rules and you dive safer than the raw number suggests.
The good news: you don't need to be hardcore or reckless to start. You need curiosity, patience for procedure — and the willingness to log plenty of recreational dives first.

Before a tech course even makes sense, your recreational diving must be automatic: buoyancy without thinking, trim without kicking to compensate, gas consumption in the green zone. If that's missing, practice there first — a tech course is the wrong place to catch up on basics.
Before committing to an agency, try a trial session or talk to graduates. The difference between philosophies is often felt in the water, not in the brochure.
The biggest safety factor when starting out is you: honestly assess whether buoyancy, trim and stress management are truly automatic. A fifth of all reported diving fatalities involve technical dives — not because the sport is inherently more dangerous, but because mistakes are forgiven less often in an environment without a direct escape route.
Never enter a tech course whose depth or deco obligation you can't yet imagine mastering. And: no course replaces real experience — plan practice dives within your trained limits after every course, before pushing the boundary again.
Ask during a trial session about the dropout rate — how many students fail or need extra time? A good instructor tells you honestly. High failure rates aren't a bad sign, they show nobody gets waved through.
And a secret few mention beforehand: the theory hours are often harder than the water. Master gas planning and decompression theory on dry land first, and you'll dive far more relaxed.
