Why the hip belt matters more than pack size: fit, torso length and the right packing system for multiple trekking days.
Question: "Isn't a bigger backpack than my day-hike pack enough?" Honest answer: no — size is only half the story. The real lever with a trekking backpack is fit, especially the hip belt. Set up correctly, it carries 80 to 90 percent of the pack's total weight — not your shoulders. Almost the entire load moves from your sensitive shoulders onto the strongest bones in your body, your pelvis.
If you don't use that lever, you carry every kilo twice over multiple days: once on your back, once in evening neck and shoulder tension. On a day hike that barely registers. On a trek, where load adds up day after day, fit decides whether you're still enjoying day 4 or just enduring it.
Torso length is measured from the seventh cervical vertebra to the top of the hip bone, not from head to toe. Two equally tall people can have completely different torso lengths — a generic "size M" tells you nothing, you need the actual centimeters.

Bottom: bulky, rarely used gear (sleeping bag). Middle, close to your back: heavy items (stove, water) — keeping them close to your spine shortens the lever arm and spares your back. Middle, outer: medium-weight, frequently used items. Top/lid: whatever you need quickly on the trail (rain gear, snacks, map).
An oversized pack tempts you to fill it — more volume almost always means more weight. Hut trekking without tent/stove often works with 30-50 liters; fully self-sufficient tent trekking needs 50-70 liters.
Side pockets are ideal for a water bottle, sunscreen, or camera — things you want to reach on the move without putting the pack down. The built-in rain cover belongs right at the top or in its own easily accessible pocket, not buried deep in the main compartment. Once it starts raining, every second counts before your sleeping bag and clothes get wet — a pack you have to half-unpack for that costs you the most exactly at that moment.
A poorly fitted pack over multiple trekking days isn't just a comfort issue — it's a safety issue. Shoulder tension changes your posture and therefore your footing, especially on descents — and a large share of hiking accidents happen exactly there, driven by fatigue. Recheck the fit after the first hour of every stage — clothing settles, fit shifts slightly.
On your first two test hikes, deliberately readjust the hip belt after 20-30 minutes of walking. Clothing and materials settle and the belt loosens slightly — a quick retightening saves you hours of shoulder load on the trip. Experienced trekkers adjust almost automatically without even stopping.
