Why is everyone suddenly talking about foiling? The honest answer: because it changes the physics, not just the technique. Windfoil (also called windfoiling) replaces the fin under your board with a hydrofoil — and once it picks up enough speed, it lifts the entire board out of the water. No more hull contact, no more chop rattling under your feet, just the slim foil mast slicing through the surface.
That's the real punchline: while classic planing, as the freeride guides explain, only gets fun from around 15 to 22 knots, foilers lift off starting at roughly 6 knots — noticeably less than a stiff breeze, more like the wind you used to write off as "not worth going out for." Those exact days are what make windfoil so much less dependent on weather luck.
Let's clear up one mix-up right away: windfoil is not the same as wingfoil (a handheld, inflatable wing with no mast) or kitefoil (propulsion via a controllable kite). With windfoil, your entire rig — mast, boom, sail — stays the same as in classic windsurfing. Only the fin under the board gets replaced by the foil. That's also why, as a windsurfer switching over, you don't have to relearn sail handling — just the flying itself.
