How riser and limbs fit together in the ILF system, why riser length shifts your draw weight, and which starting weight actually makes sense.
“Do I need a new bow for every draw weight?” No — and that's the whole point of recurve. Almost every modern recurve bow is a modular system: a riser (the center grip section) and two limbs, which you swap independently. The system behind this is called ILF (International Limb Fitting) — a standardized connector that lets limbs from virtually any manufacturer fit virtually any riser.
That's the key difference from compound: there, the bow is one fixed unit, and a workshop overhaul is needed to change the weight noticeably. With recurve, you swap only the limbs in seconds — your riser stays your riser, whether you start at 18 pounds or train at 38 pounds years later. That's exactly why the first buying decision isn't “which bow” but “which riser plus which starting limbs.”

25 inches is the standard riser length in target recurve. Shorter risers (17–23 inches) exist for barebow or compact setups, but as a beginner in target archery, 25 inches is the safe choice — most limb poundage ratings reference exactly this length.
Limbs come in short, medium and long. On a 25-inch riser, they produce a total bow length of 66, 68 or 70 inches — determined by your draw length (arm span), not preference. A club or specialty shop measures that in minutes.
Here's where it gets interesting: limbs are marked for the standard 25-inch length — mount the same limbs on a shorter riser and the actual draw weight rises by roughly 1 pound per inch of riser shortening. A tangible comparison: it's like stretching the same rubber band over a shorter stick — it pulls tighter, even though you changed nothing about the band itself. That's why, on a 19-inch riser, you might order 34-pound limbs to end up around 40 pounds.
Because riser and limbs are separate, you can deliberately start light — adult women often at 16–26 pounds, men often around 20–25 pounds — and later swap only the limbs for a heavier pair. The riser, the anchor points for sight, stabilizer and clicker, all stay exactly the same. That saves you multiple full re-purchases over the years.
Choosing too heavy a draw weight is the classic beginner mistake in recurve — because unlike compound, you hold the full weight with no relief (see Guide 1). Pick a notch lighter than you think you can handle, especially in your first weeks of training, until shoulder and back adjust to the repetitive load. A specialty shop or coach who measures your dominant eye and draw length before you buy saves you from both a bad purchase and bad technique.
Deliberately buy your first riser "too good" for your current draw weight — a solid target-archery riser rather than a bare starter kit without an ILF connector. An ILF-compatible riser is the one component you'll likely never replace, while limbs, string and accessories grow with your progress. A riser without the standard connector, on the other hand, forces a full repurchase later.
